The flavour of Bonaire with a European twist

Why did we choose to add some European twists to our menu? It’s simple: our owners are originally from the Netherlands, and they love to share a little bit of their roots with you and the island. The culture of Bonaire hooked them to stay on the Caribbean island, which explains why the majority of our menu is still based on the authentic flavours of Bonaire.

The sweet spot of our menu is where the typical Bonaire cuisine meets European flavours. This means locally sourced seafood, Dutch specialties such as an uitsmijter and kroketten, and our new signature pizza dish – all the way from Germany: the flammkuchen.

Aside from these dishes, you can also enjoy a broad variety of meat, salads, and soups for lunch or dinner, and – of course – frozen and non frozen cocktails to get the real tropical island vibe – instantly.

Typical flavours of Bonaire

Maybe you are wondering: what are the typical foods and flavours of the island? Bonaire’s cuisine is a vibrant fusion of flavours influenced by its rich history and cultural diversity. As part of the Dutch Caribbean, Bonaire’s food draws from African, Caribbean, Latin American, and Dutch culinary traditions.

1.    Fresh Seafood

Being an island, seafood plays a central role in Bonaire’s diet. Fish such as red snapper, grouper, and lionfish are commonly served and popular seafood dishes include:

  • Wahoo. Try our home smoked wahoo to get a(nother) warm welcome to Bonaire.
  • Piska Kriyoyo. Fish cooked in a Creole sauce with tomatoes, onions, and peppers.
  • Conch. Known locally as karko, it is prepared in stews, fritters, or served grilled.
  • At Breeze ‘n Bites, we always serve a catch of the day. Ask our local team to get the freshest fish in town.

2.    Caribbean Flavours

Many dishes on Bonaire are spiced with scotch bonnet peppers, garlic, and other bold seasonings typical of Caribbean cuisine. Meals often include rice and beans, plantains, and root vegetables like sweet potatoes and cassava. Traditional local dishes include a variety of stews, soups, and comfort foods.

3.    A fair share of Dutchness

As a special municipality of the Netherlands, Bonaire’s cuisine incorporates many Dutch foods like..

  • Uitsmijters. A little more about this famous Dutch dish below.
  • Kroketten. A breaded and deep-fried cylindrical croquette filled with a creamy, savoury ragout, typically made of beef or chicken. A kroket has a crunchy exterior and a soft, flavorful filling. A must-try if you haven’t yet.
  • Cheese. The Dutch delight pur sang, integrated in many dishes or as a cheese platter.

European dishes explained

As we mentioned before, we love to share our European roots with you while you are spending your time on Bonaire. Some names on our menu might seem a little foreign to you, as there are some lunch and dinner recipes that we took straight from Europe, to your plate on Bonaire. That’s where a little explanation comes in handy.

Uitsmijter

This satisfying dish, whose name means “bouncer” in Dutch, is both simple and filling, offering a deliciously savoury brunch or lunch dish, often accompanied by a side of salad or pickles. An uitsmijter is a classic Dutch open-faced sandwich. It features one or more fried eggs with perfectly runny or firm yolks, resting atop slices of fresh bread, and often layered with melted cheese, bacon or smoked ham.

Flammkuchen

Flammkuchen is a traditional dish from the Alsace region, bordering France and Germany. It’s a thin, crispy flatbread topped with crème fraîche, thinly sliced onions, and a broad variety of garnishes like cheese, meat, fish like tuna, vegetables, or other ingredients. Think of your favourite pizza restaurant but then light, crispy versions of the menu.

Shakshuka

Europe and beyond! Shakshuka is a flavourful Middle Eastern and North African dish made by poaching eggs in a rich, spiced tomato sauce. The sauce typically includes ingredients like onions, garlic, bell peppers, cumin, paprika, and chilli peppers, creating a fragrant and slightly smoky base. The eggs are cracked directly into the sauce and cooked until the whites are set but the yolks remain soft. Often garnished with fresh herbs like parsley or cilantro, shakshuka is commonly served with crusty bread for dipping and enjoyed as a hearty brunch or lunch.
